When Should You Replace Your Catalytic Converter?

I don’t know about you but when the price of gas went over three dollars a gallon and my grocery bill nearly doubled, I knew I had to do something. The oil company’s recent billion dollar profit report convinced me no one is going to do anything to help out the little guys like you and I.

First, make sure you’re not mixing up the check engine warning light with a maintenance service light. Most maintenance service lights are triggered by hitting a certain number of miles or using a certain amount of fuel, and its just your car’s way of letting you know it’s time to get some normal maintenance work done. If it does turn out to be your car repair check engine warning light it means your car’s computer is sensing a diagnostic trouble. Your light can be coming on for a variety of reasons including a faulty emission control system which means your car is polluting the air and the diagnostic warning catalytic converter recycling light is coming on to let you know that.

Purchasing used car parts is a great way to save money at about an average of 55%. In addition to being able to cut costs and conserve natural resources, it gives you a wider range of car parts to choose from that will meet the quality requirement and functionality of new car parts.

Basically you want similar plugs as stock, but a cooler heat range and a smaller gap. The stock plugs are NGK BKR6EP-11 (2978) and are platinum tipped and have a .044 (1.1mm) gap. The ideal NGK replacement for a modified Supra would be the BKR7E (6097). It is one range cooler (the ‘7’), is non-platinum tipped (the lack of the ‘p’) and has a smaller .0315 gap (lack of the ‘-11’). This plug is also called the NGK 6097 and they are fairly inexpensive. Platinum tipped plugs are not desired for high power applications, Iridium plugs are more preferred. Unfortunately their doesn’t seem to be a BKR8E which might be better for high-HP Supras.

ADDITIVES – Also sadly, we are told by ‘authorities’ that some of the many gasoline additives are in the mix to increase performance; but because of its current overly-complex molecular structure, the real built-in function of the gasoline formula is to slow down the combustion so that only so much is actually consumed in the cylinder, and the liquid balance goes to the catalytic converter recycling. As a further insult, the additives are also there to clog and prevent the use of the Pogue-style carburetors, designed to get 200-300 mpg.

Now find the flange on the catalytic converter. It will have two bolts that you will need to remove. Be careful in this process because your whole exhaust system is only supported by two rear hangers on the muffler. This is where it will be handy to have a helping hand. Have your buddy hold up the front section of the system, otherwise it will crash to the ground.

Your vehicle will gain additional miles per gallon horsepower and emit cleaner exhaust. The additional miles per gallon come from the efficient combustion. The removal of carbon buildup along with the efficient combustion add horsepower. The fuel that is burned up in the combustion cycle doesn’t have to be burned up in the catalytic converter. The hydroxy gas that assisted in the combustion returns to water vapor. The more completely utilized fuel lessens harmful emissions. The installation of an electrolyzer is completely reversible and simple to install.
