A catalytic convertor is a small exhaust emission control device that converts exhaust gas and other pollutants from an engine to less-polluting pollutants in order to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction. The most common type of the catalytic converter and the one that is most often found in vehicles are the combusted gas mixture, also known as a ‘hot exhaust’. Two chemicals make up the catalytic converter. One is a reduction catalyst and one is a reductase. A reduction catalyst actually reduces the amount of the toxic metal that is in the catalyst, thus allowing the reaction to take place. The platinum in the catalytic converter actually absorbs the reductase or allows the reaction to take place, but it is illegal to remove the platinum from the vehicle in order to repair the vehicle. Because platinum is a valuable metal, it could be sold at a high price if taken from the vehicle. A skilled thief can easily steal the catalytic convert and resell it on black market if it is not working properly.
Another major problem with catalytic converters is that they are often created in an improper fashion. Sometimes, a catalytic converter may not fully close properly. This could lead to some gases being emitted into exhaust. Some gases could also escape through the exhaust system and into the engine through the catalytic convert. These emissions are illegal, and can cause serious problems like engine melting due to emission-induced damage.
Many catalytic converters available today don’t burn platinum, but instead use palladium or silver. While palladium can remove pollutants very well, it is also more costly to produce than platinum. You will need a new catalytic conversion for your car if you want it to release its energy completely when it is exposed to exhaust fumes.
